Zappas was a philanthropist who financed the revival of the modern Olympic Games approximately 1,460 years after the Ancient Olympic Games had been banned by the first Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius I. He was also known as Evangelos Zappas in Greece and Evanghelie Zappa in Romania (Wallachia and Moldavia).
