On Dec. 12, 1862, the Michigan Cavalry Brigade was formed in Washington D.C., made up of the 5th. Michigan, Colonel Freeman Norvell commanding, the 6th. Michigan, Colonel George Gray, commanding and the 7th. Michigan, Colonel William D. Mann, commanding.
