In parthenogenesis ("virgin birth"), the females produce eggs, but these develop into young without ever being fertilized. Parthenogenesis occurs in some fishes, several kinds of insects, and a few species of frogs and lizards. It does not normally occur in mammals because of their imprinted genes.

The phenomenon of parthenogenesis was discovered in the 18th cent. by Charles Bonnet. In 1900, Jacques Loeb accomplished the first clear case of artificial parthenogenesis when he pricked unfertilized frog eggs with a needle and found that in some cases normal embryonic development ensued.

Typically, reproduction is thought of as the combination of sperm and egg to form a zygote. In parthenogenesis, however, an egg develops in the absence of fertilization. Adults resulting from parthenogenesis are typically haploid. When forming new cells, the cells of these individuals do not undergo meiosis.

Parthenogenesis is inspired by natural occurrences in select species. Based on this phenomena, scientists have been able to study and better understand parthenogenesis so that it may be recreated artificially through experiments on the cellular level.
