One of the questions I've most heard being asked about An American Crime by those who haven't seen it is: Why would anyone want to make a movie about the brutal torture and murder of a 16-year-old girl?

An American Crime is about the true story of Gertrude Baniszewski (or, The Torture Mother if you prefer), who in the mid 60s took on two adolescent boarders, Sylvia and Jenny Likens, but soon took to beating them, especially Sylvia. An American Crime is due for release in the U.S. in August.

I had a conversation today with Tommy O'Haver, the director of AN AMERICAN CRIME. The film is based on a horrifying event that happened in Indianapolis in 1965. A young girl, Sylvia Likens, was tortured in a basement for months by a woman named Gertrude Baniszewski, her children and some neighborhood kids.
