Askja (a˙skya˙), a volcano near the centre of Iceland, first brought into notice by an eruption in 1875.

The largest volcano is Askja, situated in the middle of the lava-field of Odaahraun.

This has on its summit the gigantic crater of Askja, some twenty-five square miles in area.
