Origin:
1783; < Neo-Latin, apparently < Japanese a(w)o-ku being green + -ba combining form of ha leaf (earlier fa, *pa); compare the Japanese name for the shrub ao-ki < a(w)o green + ki(y) tree (earlier *koi)
