a narrow peninsula in NW Mexico between the Gulf of California and the Pacific, forming two territories of Mexico. 1,434,000; 55,634 sq. mi. (144,090 sq. km). Capitals: Mexicali (Northern Territory) and La Paz (Southern Territory).
Also called Baja, Lower California.

A mountainous peninsula of western Mexico extending south-southeast between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California south of the U.S. border. It was first explored by the Spanish in the 1530s.
