Berke·ley       (bûrk'lē)  Pronunciation Key 
A city of western California on San Francisco Bay north of Oakland. Founded as Oceanview on land purchased from a Spanish family in 1853, it was renamed Berkeley in 1866. A branch of the University of California is here (established 1872). Population: 101,000.
