Origin:
1670–80; < NL < Pg; perh. a conflation of Marathi kāt catechu and kāccu, with same sense, alleged to be < Malayalam; cashoo, cutch perh. < Malay kacu < Malayalam, or a cognate Dravidian word

n.  A tropical Asian feather-leaved palm (Areca catechu) cultivated for its seeds. Also called catechu.

n.  

    1. A spiny Asian tree (Acacia catechu) having bipinnately compound leaves, spikes of yellow flowers, and dark heartwood.

    2. A raw material obtained from the heartwood of this plant, used in the preparation of tannins and brown dyes. Also called cutch.
