The palo de vaca, or "cow tree," grows on rocks in Venezuela, South America.

A very extraordinary exception to the general rule that latex is highly poisonous, is found in the famous Cow Tree of Venezuela.

The cow-tree supplies a milk in appearance like that of the animal from which it takes its name, but thicker.

Yet such is the sap coming from the opening made by the axe from the massaranduba or cow-tree.

After this, on several occasions we obtained fresh milk from the cow-tree for our breakfasts and suppers.
