galoshes 
1306, probably from O.Fr. galoche, from L.L. gallicula, dim. of gallica (solea) "a Gallic (sandal)." Alternate etymology is from V.L. *galopia, from Gk. kalopodion, dim. of kalopous "shoemaker's last," from kalon "wood" + pous "foot" (see foot).
