The Governor of New South Wales, the mutiny-prone William Bligh, was removed from office by soldiers of the New South Wales Corps led by Major George Johnston (he of the wide street through the middle of Annandale). Bligh, it seems, may not have been at fault. The Australian had an article on the matter this week.

many of the Hawkesbury settlers supported the governor; but Bligh had been singularly successful in antagonizing a number of leading men in the colony, and he was personally quite unfitted to handle the situation that was developing. Thus isolated, Bligh stayed until Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived in Sydney.
