Avestan sadra- "grief, sorrow, calamity," Gk. kedos "care, trouble, sorrow," Welsh cas "pain, anger"). The noun is O.E. hete "hatred, spite," from
EXPANDP.Gmc. *khatis-, altered in M.E. to conform with the verb. Hate mail is first attested 1967.
