1930–35 (earlier in literal sense of L); < L intrōgress(us), ptp. of intrōgredī to go in, enter (intrō- intro- + -gred-, comb. form of grad(ī) to proceed, walk + -tus ptp. suffix, with -dt- > -ss-) + -ion
