Encyclopedia Article for Jamshedpur

city, East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand state, northeastern India, at the junction of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. Sometimes called Tatanagar, the city was named for industrialist Jamsetji (Jamshedji) Nusserwanji Tata, whose company opened a steel plant there in 1911, and it rapidly grew in importance. The second largest city in the state, Jamshedpur is a major rail and road junction. Industries include India's principal ironworks and steelworks, a vehicle assembly plant, and factories manufacturing agricultural implements, enameled ironware, and locomotive engine parts. It houses the National Metallurgical Laboratory and eight colleges affiliated with Ranchi University. Pop. (1991) 478,950; (2001 prelim.) 570,349
