I could not ask a porter to carry the cage; Jugurtha would certainly have eaten him through the spars.

I brought Jugurtha home without further adventure, and committed him to the charge of Michel.

But the first difficulty was to induce Jugurtha to come out of his cage; none of us dared put our hands within reach of his beak.

Jugurtha finding himself free, spread out his wings to fly away, but he could of course only fly as far as his cord would permit.

He also pledged his own word, which Jugurtha valued not less than that of the public, for his safety.
