First recorded in 1900–05; ket- + -ose ²

It is a ketose sugar, reduces Fehling's solution, forms the same osazone as glucose, and is easily fermentable by yeast.

When ketose monosaccharides are submitted to similar oxidation processes, they are broken down into shorter chain compounds.
