Probably the earliest account is that of La Vérendrye, who visited them in 1738-39.

La Vérendrye (Canadian Archives, 1889, p. 17) mentions "ramparts" and "trenches."

La Vérendrye (Canadian Archives, 1889, p. 21) speaks of these beds as "made like tombs surrounded with skins."

La Vérendrye presumably first introduced the tobacco of the whites to these people.
