  1. A city of west-central Indiana on the Wabash River northwest of Indianapolis. It is the seat of Purdue University (founded 1869). Population: 61,200.

  2. A city of south-central Louisiana west-southwest of Baton Rouge. Settled by Acadians, it is a commercial and shipping center. Population: 114,000.

Lafayette, Marquis Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de 1757-1834.  
French soldier and politician who served on George Washington's staff in the American Revolution. In France he also took part in the 1789 and 1830 revolutions.
