Massawa

Massawa, one of the hottest spots in the furnace of Africa is the capital of the Italian colony of Eritrea.

Massawa is also telegraphically connected with the outside world by a cable to Perim via Assab.

It was not, however, at Massawa that Italy first obtained a foothold in eastern Africa.

A second and larger expedition, under Prince Hassan, the son of the khedive, was sent the following year from Massawa.
