a reddish-purple, crystalline, sparingly water-soluble solid, C 8 H 8 N 6 O 6 , having a green luster, formerly used as a dye.

First recorded in 1830–40; murex + -ide ( def )

Murexide is turned, by potassa, gray in its light shades and violet in its dark ones.

The third group includes safflower, magenta, and murexide (light shades).

A little ammonia is then added, when the fine purple murexide stain will be produced.
