Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov was born May 18, 1868 (NS) to Tsar Alexander III and Empress Marie Fedorovna of Russia. Nicholas II and King George V of England Nicholas, as you can see from the above picture, resembled his first cousin (through his mother's sister), King George, V of England.

Nicholas II was the last tsar of Russia. He was deposed during the Russian Revolution and executed by the Bolsheviks.

In 1914, World War I began. Nicholas II took command of the army in 1915. He left the government of Russia in the hands of Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna and her advisor Rasputin.

Even greater losses, however, were suffered in World War I, which Russia entered on the Allied side on August 1, 1914. Loss of territory, massive casualties and confusion at home were the main reasons for the Second Russian Revolution in February 1917. On March 2, 1917, Nicholas II abdicated.
