c.1315, "slab or flat surface for an inscription" (especially the two Mosaic tables of stone), from O.Fr. tablete (13c.), dim. of table "slab" (see table). The meaning "lozenge, pill" is first recorded 1582; that of "pad of writing paper" in 1880.

A kind of pocket memorandum book. 5. A flattish cake or piece; as, tablets of arsenic were formerly worn as a preservative against the plague. 6. (Pharm.)
