Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of

(1876) A novel by Mark Twain; the title character is a wily and adventurous boy. In one famous episode, Tom Sawyer tricks his friends into whitewashing a fence for him by pretending it is a great privilege and making them pay to take over the job.

Note: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a sequel to Tom Sawyer; Huck Finn is Tom's best friend.
