A city of north-central Poland on the Vistula River northwest of Warsaw. Founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1231, it became part of the kingdom of Poland in 1454. Toruń was taken by Sweden (1703) and Prussia (1793 and 1815) before being returned to Poland in 1919. Population: 207,000.
