1510, ult. imitative, also found in M.L.G. and Low Ger. tuten "blow a horn." The noun is recorded from 1641. Meaning "cocaine" is attested by 1977. Tooting as a strong affirmative (e.g. you're damned tootin') is attested from 1932, Amer.Eng. Toots as a slang familiar form of address to a woman or girl is recorded from 1936, Amer.Eng. Toot sweet "right away, promptly," 1917, Amer.Eng., represents U.S. soldiers' mangled adaptation of Fr. toute de suite.
