an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands, characterized by comedones and pimples, esp. on the face, back, and chest, and, in severe cases, by cysts and nodules resulting in scarring.
Also called ac⋅ne vul⋅ga⋅ris [vuhl-gair-is, -gar-] .
Compare rosacea.

1820–30; < NL < LGk aknás, a manuscript error for akmás, acc. pl. of akm facial eruption, prob. to be identified with Gk akm acme

1835, from Mod.L., borrowed from aknas, a 6c. L. misreading of Gk. akmas, acc. pl. of akme "point" (see acme). The "pointed" pimples are the source of the medical use.
