agadez
town, central Niger, at the southern edge of the Air massif. Agadez is a market town at a crossroads, 460 miles (740 km) northeast of Niamey, the national capital. Once the seat of a Tuareg sultanate (dating from the 15th century), the town remains the centre for Tuareg pastoralists, who still wander over the arid plateau.
