noun
a fertile soil of humid regions that occurs worldwide, especially where native broadleaf forests were established, and is highly productive for agriculture.

Origin:
1970–75; alf- (according to the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, initiator of the term, a “meaningless syllable”) + -i- + -sol
