In 1891 the Anjo station on the railroad between Tokyo and Kobe was opened, and the new town developed around it. With far-sighted planning and the early establishment of agricultural cooperatives, Anjo became a model farm community. Its diversified farming of rice, wheat, poultry, and cattle lent it the name Little Denmark of Japan.
