genus of mosquitoes, 1899, Mod.L., coined by Ger. entomologist Johann Wilhelm Meigen, 1818, from Gk. anopheles "useless, hurtful, harmful," from priv. prefix an- + ophelos "use, help, advantage" (see Ophelia). So called because it conveys malaria.
