1805–15; < F, equiv.to aventure chance (see adventure ) + -ine -ine 2 ; so called because metal particles are introduced into the molten glass pell-mell (à l'aventure)

  2. Any of several varieties of quartz or feldspar flecked with particles of mica, hematite, or other materials. Also called sunstone.
