an overhead frame, fastened to a bed, from which a splinted, fractured leg or arm is suspended and held in traction.

Origin:
1925–30; so called because first used in the Balkan Mountains

An over-the-bed or free-standing horizontal pole, supported by uprights, from which a splinted limb can be suspended. Also called Balkan splint.
