Superconducting at up to about –11° C, Dias’s yttrium-hydrogen superconductor is one of the highest-temperature superconductors known.

Dias and Zurek also reported their results March 19 in Physical Review Letters.

While Dias’s carbon, sulfur and hydrogen superconductor is still the temperature record-holder, the new material requires a significantly lower pressure — although at 182 gigapascals, it’s still no simple squeeze.

Still, Dias and his colleagues believe their findings can be recreated in let’s just say “slightly” less high-pressure situations, particularly if they can change the chemistry of their shocking invention.

Future work will focus on describing the material more completely, Dias says.
