Blaine, James Gillespie Known as "the Plumed Knight." 1830-1893.  
American politician. A U.S. representative (1863-1876) and senator (1876-1881) from Maine, he was U.S. secretary of state (1881 and 1889-1892) and lost the 1884 presidential election to Grover Cleveland.
