Bosch, Hieronymus

A Dutch painter of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. His allegorical religious works include his masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights, in which grotesque, fantastical creatures mingle with human figures.

Note: Bosch's work is often considered a forerunner of surrealism.
