"alloy of copper, zinc, and tin, resembling gold," 1765, from Fr. or moulu, lit. "ground gold," from or "gold" (from L. aurum, from PIE *aus- "gold.") + moulu "ground up," pp. of moudre "to grind," from L. molere "to grind."
