His, Wilhelm (1863–1934), German physician. A pioneer cardiologist, His was one of the first to recognizethat the heartbeat originates in nodes of modified heart muscle. In 1893 he described the atrioventricular bundle, which is now often known as the bundle of His. He is also remembered for hisdescription of trench fever in 1916, when it was a major medical problem.

The bundle of cardiac muscle fibers that passes from the atrioventricular node to the interventricular septum and then the ventricles. It conducts the electrical impulses that regulate the heartbeat from the right atrium to the left and right ventricles. The bundle of His is named after its discoverer, German cardiologist Wilhelm His (1836-1934).
