Bush·nell   (bŏŏsh'nəl)
American inventor who designed (1775) a man-propelled submarine for use against British ships in the Revolution. The device proved ineffectual (it was ridiculed as "Bushnell's Turtle") but earned him later regard as "the Father of the Submarine."
