a pigment used in painting, consisting of cadmium sulfide and characterized by its strong yellow color and permanence.

First recorded in 1870–75

Sulphide of cadmium is used as a pigment (cadmium yellow); and the metal and some of its salts are useful reagents.

Cadmium yellow may easily be mistaken for chrome yellow, and crimson Lake for permanent crimson.

The color of the gills is orange to cadmium orange, or sometimes paler, cadmium yellow or deep chrome.

The older types of colouring matter—such as cadmium yellow, ochres, vermilion, umbers—have been superseded.

Cadmium yellow is composed of cadmium and sulphur—white lead of lead and carbonic acid.
