Carl Bert Albert

American politician (b. May 10, 1908, McAlester, Okla.-d. Feb. 4, 2000, McAlester), served as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1976. He twice stood briefly next in line for the presidency-in 1973 after Spiro Agnew resigned as vice president and again in 1974 after the resignation of Pres. Richard M. Nixon. During his three decades (1946-76) in Congress, Albert played a key role in many behind-the-scenes negotiations and was instrumental in helping pass historic civil rights legislation during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson
