vel·vet·leaf (věl'vĭt-lēf') n. A tropical Asian annual herb (Abutilon theophrasti) naturalized in the United States, having large velvety heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers. It is an important fiber plant in northern China. Also called China jute.
