Ab·ba·do   (ə-bä'dō)   
Italian conductor who served as the principal conductor and artistic director at La Scala (1968-1986) prior to leading the London Symphony Orchestra (1979-1988) and the Vienna Staatsoper (1986-1991). In 1989 he became director of the Berlin Philharmonic.
