Clement VI

I know not whether we should ascribe to magnanimity or to a politic motive the behaviour of Clement VI.

These were faults that eclipsed all the good qualities of Clement VI.

The present church was begun in 1344 by Clement VI, who built the choir and four bays of the nave.

After making this concession the pope died, and was succeeded by Clement VI.

Avignon was hers, and she sold it for 80,000 golden florins to Clement VI, who thus made an excellent bargain for the papacy.
