1375–1425; late ME < L congruent- (s. of congruēns, prp. of congruere to come together, fit in, agree), equiv. to con- con- + -gru- base of uncert. meaning (attested only in this v. and ingruere to fall upon) + -ent- -ent

    1. Coinciding exactly when superimposed: congruent triangles.

    2. Of or relating to two numbers that have the same remainder when divided by a third number. For example, 11 and 26 are congruent when the modulus is 5.

Relating to geometric figures that have the same size and shape. Two triangles are congruent, for example, if their sides are of the same length and their internal angles are of the same measure.
