diaphragm phenomenon in Medicine

diaphragm phenomenon n.
A lowering of the line of retraction on the side of the chest that marks the insertion of the diaphragm during inspiration followed by an elevation during expiration. This phenomenon does not occur when the pleural sac is distended. Also called Litten's phenomenon.
