1935–40; < G Dirndl, short for Dirndlkleid, equiv. to Dirndl young woman (orig. Bavarian, Austrian dial., dim. of Dirne young woman, MHG dierne, OHG thiorna; akin to thane ) + Kleid dress (see cloth )
