Drinker, Philip (1894–1972), American industrial hygienist. Drinker introduced the Drinker respirator, or iron lung, in 1929. He also invented a smallchamber for maintaining respiration in newborn babies. During his career he studied industrial hygiene, the control of air pollution, and toxicology.

n.
An airtight metal tank enclosing all the body except the head and forcing the lungs to inhale and exhale by regulating changes in air pressure. Also called iron lung.
