town, northeastern Andhra Pradesh state, southern India, at the junction of the Godavari and Krishna canal systems. The name of the town was changed to its present form in 1949. Mainly a manufacturing town, Eluru produces textiles and leather products but is most noted for its pile carpets. It is also a centre for trade in rice, oilseeds, tobacco, and sugar.
