  3. To assure payment of (drafts or notes, for example) by setting aside funds.
  4. Sports To attempt to hold (a lead) by playing careful defense and avoiding risky plays.
  5. Baseball
    1. To swing at a pitch near (home plate) in order to avoid being called out on strikes.
    2. To swing at a pitch so as to give (a base runner) a better chance of advancing.

Usage: To defend is literally to ward off; to protect is to cover so as to secure against approaching danger. We defend those who are attacked; we protect those who are liable to injury or invasion. A fortress is defended by its guns, and protected by its wall.
